Gastric bypass surgery

Gastric bypass is performed laparoscopically by an experienced surgeon. Bypass changes the configuration of the digestive tract by shifting the connection of the small intestine to the stomach, thereby reducing nutrient absorption. This "bypass" for food consists of excluding 70 cm to two metres of the small intestine (length varies according to methods and medical centres) from the route for food, thus making a shortcut between the stomach and the intestine and connecting the small intestine to the stomach after the omitted part.

The stomach is also cut and only a small part of the stomach, to which the intestine is connected, is left functional.

The result: the food cannot be digested perfectly, so it cannot be absorbed sufficiently. The body does not get as much energy and the person loses weight. The amount of eaten food does not differ significantly from the amount before the surgery, but of course, his structure needs to be adjusted.

After the surgery, the patient must be regularly monitored in metabolic counselling.

A huge advantage of this new method is offered to overly obese diabetics, for whom the surgery will virtually solve, or significantly alleviate, their diabetes. Blood sugar level improves just a few days after surgery, and in approximately two years after bypass surgery, up to 90% of patients are free of diabetes medication (insulin use).
